International Arts Education Week

According to the decision of the 36th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 2011 (36/C Resolution 38), the 4th week of May was proclaimed as the International Arts Education Week.

Art, in all its diverse forms, plays a crucial role in a comprehensive education that fosters the complete development of individuals. In today’s world, the skills, values, and behaviors promoted by arts education hold even greater significance. These essential competencies – creativity, collaboration, and imaginative problem-solving – not only build resilience but also cultivate an appreciation for cultural diversity, freedom of expression, and the ability to think critically and innovatively. As a catalyst for meaningful dialogue, art has the power to accelerate social inclusion and promote tolerance in our interconnected, multicultural societies.

At the core of our beliefs, we wholeheartedly embrace and encourage various forms of artistic innovation on a global scale. It is through expanding the influence of these new artistic expressions that we can collectively enrich our experiences.

One of the remarkable aspects of art is its ability to unite people. Whether it takes the form of a mesmerizing painting, a captivating artifact, or a soul-stirring piece of ancestral music, art carries with it the profound history of civilizations and the unbreakable threads that bind us all together. It allows us to not only feel but also understand the commonalities that unite humanity, even amidst the beautiful diversity of cultures and expressions. In this way, art actively contributes to creating a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

Art truly has the power to transform, enlighten, and inspire, making it an indispensable part of our lives and an invaluable force for positive change.

We welcome artists, scholars, and educators to share their suggestions and ideas for our International Arts Education Week program. We would love to hear from you! You can contact us at iaew@wiae.org.
